Stadium Food, Tailgates, Sports Restaurants and we're just getting started!
Everyone knows the old saying, “you don’t know what you got till it’s gone.” Well that was me a few months ago. For almost a decade I worked for a premier sports restaurant company partnered with the NFL and Hall of Fame Athletes. I was working a minimum of 10+ hours a day, sometimes 7 days a week, and if I was lucky I’d get one full week of vacation a year which I normally worked during. I did it for over nine years and I loved it. Yeah, I guess that makes me a workaholic. But over time the grind started to get to me and I needed a change so I packed my bags and started a new job in Chicago.
Now I didn’t get too far away from what I was doing before. I was still working in hospitality marketing but this time I was overseeing a variety of concepts, not just sports restaurants. Though after several months with the new company I realized something was missing. I missed listening and talking sports all the time, I missed some of the amazing food that our chefs prepared on a daily basis, and I missed being part of a small company growing into something special.
At my new job I oversaw our social media strategy which meant I was always on Instagram. One day I was looking up social media food influencers and one thing was clear, there were soooo many of them but very few that focused on amazing stadium and sports restaurant food. It didn’t take long to hit me that I should start my own and that sports fans is how @SportsFoodie was born.
As I developed the account and started coming up with ideas, I realized this is what I was missing, sports food and everything that came with it. Sounds a bit silly I know, but it's something that was with me for about 10 years and now was gone. As I started my new venture, I was happy to have it back plus who doesn’t want to eat amazing burgers, and other delicious food chefs (both professional & amateaur) come up with every game day.
Since starting Sports Foodie on Instagram in the Fall, I’ve been amazed by the response. In less than 4 months, it was already over 10,000 followers! Seems like there are plenty of people that love juicy burgers as much as I do. What started on Instagram has grown into a Twitter account (@TheSportsFoodie), Facebook Page, Pinterest and now blog (Snapchat pending).
As the calendar year begins, there are so many exciting events ahead that I can’t wait to share the food story with you: Super Bowl 50 in San Francisco, the Kentucky Derby, Baseball season, the Olympics in Rio and so many more. I’m particularly excited about next week’s post featuring the Australian Open and the ridiculously over-the-top burgers from the land down under. You’ll see these stories and more including a monthly “Power Rankings” highlighting the best and hottest sports restaurants.
When I started this I wasn’t sure where it could go and that still is true today with the launch of the blog. We’ll see where it goes from here as Sports Foodie continues to evolve. One thing is certain, in the world of sports there is never a dull moment. I’m looking forward to sharing this journey with you and maybe you too will find a little something you're missing.
